Key takeaway

People searching for a “Mastercard stablecoin card” may expect a single product they can apply for. In fact, Mastercard is a card network, not the issuer. You apply for a branded card issued by a licensed institution that uses Mastercard's network to process payments.

This distinction matters because the same Mastercard-branded product can be issued by different institutions in different markets, with different fees, limits, and eligibility.

Of the 120 brands in our database, 29 list Mastercard (including 8 that also list Visa). This guide lists them with the available issuing arrangements so you can check the details.

Why “Mastercard” is not enough to choose a card

Three reasons:

  1. The issuer sets eligibility, not the network. Mastercard acceptance is global, but issuers are regulated in their own jurisdictions and may serve only certain residents. SwissBorg serves the EEA and UK, Orbi serves Mexico, and Xapo serves its supported jurisdictions; the network is the same, but eligibility differs.
  2. The issuer sets fees. Mastercard supplies a reference exchange rate, but an issuer can add a markup. Our database lists 0% FX markup for Bleap, 1.5% FX for Bitrefill, 1.5% for THORWallet (1.0% for its Swiss IBAN option), and 0%–3% by region for Binance Card Global. Costs can differ several times over despite the same network.
  3. Card tier affects benefits. Xapo is a World Elite debit card; most of the others are standard debit or virtual cards. Benefits, limits, and insurance terms can differ.

Four checks to make before applying

  1. Issuing entity. Find the issuer in the card agreement and confirm it is licensed for your residence. Our BIN dataset records sponsor banks and issuers including Rain, Transact Payments, Moorwand, Monavate, Unlimit, and Galileo.
  2. BIN and card type. Check the BIN with the network's official lookup tool and cross-reference our BIN issuer lookup, which has reviewed 24 stablecoin-card BINs.
  3. Market and document eligibility. Distinguish merchant acceptance from the applicant-eligibility list. Acceptance in more than 180 countries does not mean you can apply.
  4. Full fee schedule. Check issuance, monthly/annual, top-up, FX, ATM, and inactivity fees separately. Xapo, for example, uses a membership-fee model; its official FAQ lists $1,000 per year, so “no FX markup” is not the whole cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better, a Mastercard or Visa stablecoin card?

The network alone does not determine which card is better. Check whether the issuer accepts applicants from your market and whether the fees fit your use case. Our database lists 81 cards involving Visa and 29 involving Mastercard; that reflects market coverage, not quality.

Why does a website say a card supports Mastercard when I cannot find it in the app?

A brand may use different networks in different regions. For example, Wirex One can switch between Visa and Mastercard by market and card program; OKX Card is Mastercard in the EEA, while other regions may use Visa or Mastercard. Check the card agreement in your account.

How does Mastercard's exchange rate relate to the issuer's markup?

Mastercard supplies a settlement reference rate. The issuer may add a markup or pass the rate through without one. “Settles at the Mastercard rate” does not state the total cost; check separately for an FX markup.
